Credits are the main, indispensable currency of Techniconica and are used in almost all transactions as a means of transferring value or retaining value long term.
The credit system employed today across Techniconica dates back to the time of the Generational ships leaving Earth all those centuries before. They were originally a means to ensure complete control the populace aboard the Generational ships - ensuring obedience and upmost control through the careful manipulation of the credit supply.
All duties, from menial ones such as cleaning through to commanding mining rigs were given a credit value attached to them, and if a member of the ship didn't work, they couldn't eat or drink. This totalitarian regime was harsh, but nessecary - without such complete control, the General ships would quickly break down.
To dissuade thievery of credits - such relatively petty crimes were treated as a major offence, punishable by severe censure and even death in extreme cases for larger sums.
Since leaving the Generational ships, credits have continued to be used for barter & trade, and issued as the de facto method of payment since Techniconica was settled. Many Districts continue to utilise this same method of control as their ancestors, although such a system is far more open to abuse as it is now no longer directly controlled by a single body, but credits can be quickly created by the Districts. Rampent inflation is kept in check by common necessarity - with a singularly valued commodity of relatively stable value, flooding the world with credits would cause harm to the ones doing the flooding.
The credits themselves take the form of small slips of pressed metals which are colour coded to denote their respective value:
